Federal regulators shut down a Central California slaughterhouse Monday after receiving undercover video showing dairy cows — some unable to walk — being repeatedly shocked and shot before being slaughtered.

In a few hours, someone in the industry will say, this is an isolated incident and they practice the highest standards of animal welfare and safety.

Wednesday, June 20, the American Veterinary Medical Association (AMVA) and the Animal Health Institute (AHI) hosted a discussion examining the critical role that veterinarians play in food safety and maintaining animal health as a key driver in overall public.

Indonesia's biggest cattle importer says it's been difficult to get the industry to accept new regulations set by the Australian government. It's a year since the live export trade with Indonesia was banned, following shocking television footage of Australian cattle being abused in Indonesian abattoirs.

International Livestock Exports (ILE) has voluntarily installed CCTV cameras in four abattoirs in its Indonesian supply chain as an early response to the alleged animal welfare breaches raised earlier this year, which the government reported on last week. It’s the first time CCTV cameras have been used to oversee animal welfare in the Indonesian market.

Animal welfare breaches have been uncovered in all 10 of the state's red meat abattoirs, a government review has found. The NSW Food Authority has confirmed that an audit of practices in red meat abattoirs across the state has resulted in the issuing of improvement notices over animal welfare issues across the board.

PHILADELPHIA -- An undercover investigation at a central Pennsylvania egg farm found hens suffering in severely overcrowded cages, along with mummified bird carcasses, thick layers of dead flies and other “deplorable” conditions, officials with the Humane Society of the United States said Thursday.

COLUMBIA, Mo. ¬-- Based on a recent study, University of Missouri and Oregon researchers believe a legal definition for what constitutes “cruelty-free” labeled products should be determined and manufacturers should be required to abide by the legal use of the label.
