ASHEVILLE -- The number of reported cases in a three-month Buncombe-based salmonella outbreak is still climbing, but health officials say they’re seeing fewer and fewer new cases of the disease each week. The total number of reported cases linked to the outbreak was 83 as of Friday afternoon, 62 of which involved residents of Buncombe County.

This is the chicken salad sandwich Amy will have for lunch later today.

I’ve done what I can to make sure she doesn’t barf (at least from this sandwich). And that means using commercial mayonnaise.

Caribe Produce LTD Co. of McAllen, TX, is recalling 286 cases of Papaya Maradol, Caribeña Brand papayas packed in 35 lb. cartons marked with the brand “ Caribeña “ and “ Product of Mexico” stamped on the side.

A total of 316 persons infected with the outbreak strains of Salmonella Bareilly (304 persons) or Salmonella Nchanga (12 persons) have been reported from 26 states and the District of Columbia, up from 258 earlier this month. Is raw really better? I don’t know too many microbiologists who go in for the raw sushi, or raw anything.

A St. Paul restaurant tightened its food safety procedures shortly after diners at two parties, held three days apart earlier this year, tested positive for salmonella infection, according to city inspection reports recently obtained by Whistleblower.

The investigation into the source of Salmonella Paratyphi B linked to Smiling Hara Tempeh now focuses on a Maryland company who distributed a fungal starter culture used to make the product. According to the Citizen-Times, North Carolina Dept of Agriculture and Consumer Services identified the distributor as Tempeh Online of Rockville MD.

A total of 15 individuals infected with the outbreak strain of Salmonella Infantis have been reported from 9 states. Additionally, one ill person has been reported from Canada.
