More than 50 people from throughout Southern Colorado attended a workshop earlier this month in Rocky Ford on handling food safely. They represented 22 farms and four agencies that assist farmers. Participants were from Rocky Ford, Fowler, La Junta, Ordway, Manzanola, Avondale, Pueblo, and Canon City. The training was hosted by Colorado State University Extension, Otero County.

According to the Ottawa Citizen, public health officials have found Salmonella typhimurium in frozen ground beef and Salmonella Heidelberg in raw chicken samples taken from a Lunch Lady franchise that has been linked to an outbreak.

Although things are supossedly getting better, tough economic times since 2008 have led to an increase of folks relying on food banks and soup kitchens. Stories of concerned people distributing donated or leftover food have been common over the past couple of years as communities come together to support those hit hardest.

Supervalu, the nation’s second-largest grocery chain, Kroger, the nation's largest grocery chain and 400-store Stop & Shop have all announced they would no longer purchase ground beef products containing finely textured beef.

I love to cook but sometimes I get into a rut when it comes to new recipes. I've recently discovered the social networking site Pinterest for cooking inspiration. The folks I follow on Pinterest have led me to glazed pork roast, baked penne with broccoli and a good spinach, blueberry and chèvre salad. Not bad stuff.
