    On April 21, 2009, CDC reported that two recent cases of febrile respiratory illness in children in southern California had been caused by infection with genetically similar swine influenza A (H1N1) viruses. The viruses contained a unique combination of gene segments that had not been reported previously among swine or human influenza viruses in the United States or elsewhere (1).

    Since 1990, raw or slightly cooked sprouts have caused an estimated 2,273 illnesses, through 37 outbreaks. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration estimates that sprout-link outbreaks account for 40 per cent of all food-borne illness associated with produce.

Twenty-three (23) cases of Salmonella have been reported since January of this year. We would normally expect approximately seven (7) cases in this time period.

    SANTA CLARITA, Calif. -- The FBI is investigating the contamination of bottled water at a school in Southern California. Twelve students at Mesa Junior High School in Santa Clarita complained of headaches, nausea and dizziness after drinking water from a vending machine. It appeared to contain a "bleach-like substance."

    MEXICO CITY -- Mexico shut down schools, museums, libraries and state-run theaters across it overcrowded capital Friday in hopes of containing a swine flu outbreak that authorities say killed at least 20 people — and perhaps dozens more. World health authorities worried openly that the strange new virus could become a global epidemic.
