    Though cases of botulism food poisoning aren't common in the United States today, they're nonetheless of concern to food safety researchers. That's why Agricultural Research Service (ARS) biologist Larry H. Stanker and colleagues at the ARS Western Regional Research Center in Albany, Calif., developed a new, improved test for detecting what's known as "serotype A" of the toxin.

    Markham Stouffville Hospital has come up squeaky-clean in new data reporting hand hygiene compliance at Ontario's hospitals. New patient safety indicators show staff were observed washing their hands before patient contact more than eight out of 10 times before patient contact and 95 per cent after.

    Parents should be on alert for raccoon roundworm, a rare parasite transmitted through contact with the animal's feces, which has left an infant with brain damage and a teenager blind, says New York City's health department. Raccoon roundworm or Baylisascaris procyonis is an extremely rare parasitic infection in humans that can cause nausea, nerve damage and even death.

    Excessive use of pesticides on farmlands of Malancha and Naogakaith in Dhamrai upazila has led to death of at least three children and a number of calves, dogs and fowls last month. For same reasons, some 13 other children, all aged below seven, were hospitalised, while some farmers too fell sick during the period.
