    When you think of cattle feed very few of us probably imagine chicken manure. Certainly it would be the last thing that would enter the mind of most of us from farmers to eaters. Some time ago the NFU was approached about the possible practice of feeding chicken litter to cattle in the United States, and potentially in other nations that export their beef to Canada.

    To most of us, animals are harmless companions. But what happens when a disease jumps across species from animals to humans? This process – known as zoonosis – is more common than you may think. Many of the infectious diseases that have caused major sickness and deaths in humans worldwide originated from animals.

    U.S. President Obama went to another burger shop in Washington for lunch today, ordering up a cheeseburger with lettuce, tomato, jalapeno peppers, and mustard – not the fancy Dijon mustard. He also ordered a cheeseburger for Brian Williams, anchor for NBC. The network was filming a day-in-the-life program at the White House.

South Florida avocado grower-shippers, like their fruit and vegetable counterparts, kept a close watch on the developing crisis and worked to make sure such a traumatic experience that devastated the U.S. tomato industry wouldn’t happen to them.

    Gregory Dicum, the author of “The Coffee Book: Anatomy of an Industry From Crop to the Last Drop,” writes in a review of John Reader’s “Potato: A History of the Propitious Esculent” set to appear Sunday that Reader argues that the potato’s low-key ubiquity is an indication of just how central the potato is to our lives.

    Barbara Freeman was looking after their six-month-old daughter instead of dining with her husband of 18 months when he collapsed in a restaurant and later died after eating a tomato canape. Coroner Murray Jamiesen yesterday confirmed the cause of Mr Freeman's death as an anaphylactic reaction.

    Seven more deer sampled in Hampshire County test positive for Chronic Wasting Disease.   Since it was first discovered in a road-killed deer near Slanesville in 2005, the DNR has been aggressively targeting the dangerous virus.  To date, 45 deer taken from the containment zone have tested positive.

    Chang Farm, River Road, Whatley, MA is issuing a voluntary recall of Bean and Soy sprouts produced from Chang Farms, with specific expired date codes because of the possible presence of Listeria monocytogenes (L. Monocytogenes) contamination.
