    MEXICO CITY -- Mexico, considered the birthplace of corn, is reviewing more than two dozen requests to begin experimental planting of genetically modified crops, the agriculture ministry said on Thursday. Since publishing regulations in March last year to allow select plantings, the government has received 25 requests from farmers and companies interested in the GMO seeds.

    Agricultural Research Service (ARS) scientists have sequenced the genome of a parasite that can kill honey bees. Nosema ceranae is one of many pathogens suspected of contributing to the current bee population decline, termed colony collapse disorder (CCD). Researchers describe the parasite's genome in a study published June 5 in the open-access journal PLoS Pathogens.

    SACRAMENTO -- A food-safety campaign to tighten up the standard for meat served in schools and to give the state new power to recall contaminated food largely stalled Wednesday in the Senate. Senators rejected Senate Bill 416 by Sen. Dean Florez, D-Shafter, that would have authorized schools to buy meat and poultry that hadn't been routinely treated with antibiotic drugs.

    In 1996, Haylee Bernstein, then three years old, suffered a near fatal brush with food contamination after eating what her parents thought was a healthy salad containing prewashed lettuce.
