    By using a whole-genome oligonucleotide microarray to investigate the transcriptome profiles of LYP9 rice and its parental cultivars, Zhu Lihuang and colleagues from the Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences and National Hybrid Rice Research and Development Center shed light on the hereditary basis and molecular mechanism of a popular superhybrid rice variety.

    Three new rice varieties bred by the International Rice Research Institute (IRRI) have been officially recommended for commercial cultivation in the Philippines. They were field tested and evaluated by the Rice Varietal Improvement Group through the National Cooperative Testing (NCT) program of the Philippine Rice Research Institute (PhilRice).

    Australians’ taste for cheese is continuing to mature, with the types and styles we consume changing dramatically in recent years according to cheese connoisseurs. Free trade agreements and changes to legislation has seen the variety of cheeses avail able swell, but some still claim we are limited compared to overseas markets, because of restrictions on raw milk cheese.

    Inspections at the Setton Pistachio plant in Terra Bella, Calif., turned up several food safety shortcomings that may be linked to positive salmonella tests of nuts shipped from the plant, according to a Food and Drug Administration report.
