    A German man who was caught with 49 live lizards in his luggage at Munich airport claimed the creatures were for his dinner and even offered to bite the head off one to prove it.

    I received a bunch of my food safety education while working with fruit and vegetable farmers in southern Ontario (that's in Canada). Sure, I learned lots of stuff in classes, but a lot of my training on practical ways to keep folks from barfing was in greenhouses, fields and orchards. Farmers deal with variability in weather, wildlife, prices and staff.

    The latest entry to our food-related 911 Hall of Shame is Donna Marie Nichols of Rockwood, Tennessee (right, exactly as shown) who called 911 twice to complain about a substandard fast food hamburger. In one call, obtained by the website The Smoking Gun, Ms Nichols, 50, tells the 911 dispatcher that the burger is "no good" and "nasty."

    On March 22, 2005, Anna Ayala claimed she found a finger in a bowl of chili at a San Jose Wendy’s restaurant. The finger became the talk of the Internet and late-night talk shows, spawned numerous bizarre tips and theories about the source of the finger, and led to dozens of copycat claims. Wendy’s lost tens of millions of dollars.

    Julie Powell, who wrote that Julie and Julia book that became the movie with Meryl Streep impersonating Dan Aykroyd impersonating Julia Child, writes in the New York Times today that when the city’s restaurant inspection disclosure program started 19 months ago, she was going to eat at restaurants with a “C.”

    The investigation continues after a young couple alleged finding a dead rodent in a bag of chips. According to their lawyer, Donald Morris, barrister and solicitor with Kirkland, Murphy and Kennedy in Smiths Falls, on Jan. 3, Ben Stoddard went to the Queen Street Convenience store in Smiths Falls and purchased a large sized bag of Miss Vickie's Salt and Vinegar Chips.

    Police are investigating allegations of food contamination at a crown court in east London after judges' lunches at Snaresbrook Crown Court were allegedly spiked with urine. The Sun newspaper said it was feared someone with a grudge against the justice system had launched a revenge campaign. Traces of urine were believed to have been found in soups, salads and sandwiches.

    I was pushing a cart full of groceries to the end of the parking lot before loading up the bike trailer when a wheel suddenly locked and I stopped. A bemused shopping cart gatherer said, “You can’t take shopping carts off the property.”
