Q: Why should I use a food thermometer? I usually can tell when something is done by just looking. A: Everyone is at risk for foodborne illness. One effective way to prevent illness is to use a food thermometer to check the internal temperature of meat, poultry, and egg dishes.

Each year about 200,000 New Zealanders get sick from foodborne bugs and estimates are that almost half of those cases are due to mishandling food in the home. With more people buying smarter, including making bulk purchases, the potential for food safety problems can also be multiplied.

Sunday's New York Times cover story on the hamburger patty that paralyzed a young woman in Ohio awakened even the least neurotic eaters to the hazards of ground meat. But to those who—OK, those of us who—have long been wary of E. coli and "trimmings," the piece offered an extreme (and extremely well-reported) version of the kind of thing we terrify ourselves with all the time.

Sorenne did not sleep last night. There was seemingly nothing to console her, and I was up much of the night. But I’m getting some payback now as she enters the third hour of her nap, and decided a homemade hamburger with grilled corn and salad would make a decent lunch for myself. Coupled with the season premier of Californication on the recorderer, I was set.

Earlier this week on Jon and Kate plus 8, or whatever it’s called, newly single Kate took to the grill for apparently the first time and was terrified of poisoning her brood. “Dear chicken, please do not give us sammonella. Love Kate.”

Grungy communal living spaces. Mold in the fridge. Lukewarm leftovers. The absence of mom . . . Those are just a few of the food-safety challenges facing college students. Food-related illnesses, such as E. coli and salmonella infection, can creep into a dorm — or any setting where people gather. But students aren't always alert to the risks.
