    Sharjah -- The municipality of Sharjah fined more than 4,300 food establishments last year for selling poor quality products and for commercial fraud, a senior official said yesterday. The announcement was made after the Annual Report 2011 of the Food Control Section at Sharjah Municipality was published.

    It’s not just the greater Atlanta-area where wannabies are trying to trade on the rock-star status of public health inspectors. In India, the Oshiwara police have arrested two men for allegedly posing as Food and Drug Administration (FDA) officials and trying to extort Rs 50,000 from a bakery in the area.

    There's been a food fight fomenting between local restaurateurs who say they smell a rotten egg in the health- inspection process and Denver's Department of Environmental Health, which says it's only enforcing the law.

    My Fox Atlanta reports that investigators in Fayette County say a bogus health inspector is going around to restaurants and threatening to conduct spot inspections. They say the man backs down if they agree to feed him for free.

    About 650 copies of The Unfiltered Lens, a student paper at the Community College of Rhode Island, have been reported stolen, prompting speculation the thefts may be a response to Lens reports on campus cockroach sightings and food safety violations.

In addition to earning a doctorate in Food Science and Safety, he owns his own company that helps retail food operations improve their safety. NBC featured him in the report that uncovered Dallas' failed code compliance system. He's the one that called the city's food inspection program bogus.

    We've added 321 records of health inspections for restaurants, bars, cafeterias and other eateries in Kershaw, Lexington and Richland counties to our restaurant inspection database. The inspections were carried out between Jan. 25 and March 9 by Department of Health and Environmental Control inspectors.

    Two Columbus restaurants were closed temporarily yesterday for food-safety violations. The city’s Board of Health voted to close Lotus Leaf, 1595 Georgesville Square Dr., and Mecca Market & Grill, 2256 S. Hamilton Rd., for three days. Once they reopen, both will face at least four months of frequent inspections.
