WASHINGTON -- An outbreak of bacterial infections on the East Coast illustrates the popularity of raw, unpasteurized milk despite strong warnings from public health officials about the potential danger.

According to the Pennsylvania Department of Health, the number of confirmed cases of Campylobacter infection has increased to a total of 20 confirmed cases – 16 cases have been confirmed in Pennsylvania and and four cases in Maryland. Testing of the product is still underway at the Department of Agriculture.

INDIANAPOLIS -- Amid calls of “moo” and a reference or two to an “udderly” important issue, the Senate passed language Monday that would allow small Indiana dairy farmers to sell raw, unpasteurized milk.

Massachusetts health officials said today that there was no brucellosis found at a Western Massachusetts dairy farm where raw milk sales were abruptly halted last week because the farm’s owner was thought to be infected with the rare germ.
