    GALENA, Mo. -- Fourteen people in central Missouri are now sick with E. Coli and health officials linked at least half the cases to raw milk. There's been a long, nationwide debate over the safety of raw milk; in fact, it's illegal to sell in some states.

    Lab tests confirmed Tuesday what Oregon health officials suspected: Raw milk from Foundation Farm near Wilsonville was contaminated with a deadly strain of E. coli. The tests found E. coli O157:H7 in the milk, manure and the cows themselves, said Christine Stone, spokeswoman for Oregon Public Health.

    The health ministry's planned policy of prohibiting restaurants from serving raw beef liver to prevent food poisoning has been criticized by people in the restaurant industry. Some argue the ban is extreme and have suggested people in the industry will demand compensation for damage caused by the ban from the government.

    Oregon health authorities have confirmed a fifth case of E. coli infection in an outbreak traced to raw milk. All five patients are younger than 15 and three, including a toddler, are hospitalized with acute kidney failure, a complication associated with E. coli O157:H7.

    Food to many is an evangelical calling. Some find faith in monotheism, some in nature, some in the sports shrine (I prefer ice hockey, especially now that the playoffs have started and the cathedral once known as Maple-Leaf-Gardens-whatever-the-corporate-home-of-Toronto’s-disgrace-is-now is out of the theological debate), and some in the kitchen.

    JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. – The Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services confirmed several new cases of E. coli infections in humans on Friday, bringing the total number of confirmed cases in mid-Missouri up to 12. The outbreak first appeared in Boone County earlier this week but has since been found in Jackson, Clark, Camden, Miller and Cooper counties.

    Oregon health officials say three children under the age of 15 have been hospitalized with E. coli linked to raw milk from a small farm in Clackamas County. The state Public Health Division said Friday that Foundation Farm has voluntarily stopped distributing milk.

Lynne Terry of The Oregonian writes the latest outbreak associated with raw milk has put a toddler and two young teens from the Portland metro area in the hospital with E. coli poisoning, two with kidney failure. A fourth child -- also under 15 -- fell ill but was not hospitalized.
