    A 22-year-old Bilsthorpe man has died from a suspected case of the incurable Creutzfeldt-Jakob Disease (CJD) — better known as 'mad cow' disease. Andrew 'Rew' Hawker died at King's Mill Hospital on 7th May after being struck down by pneumonia while he fought the degenerative neurological disorder.

    SPRINGFIELD -- The Springfield-Greene County Health Department is warning people to watch out for a highly infectious bacterium. Nearly a dozen people have come down with shigella in this month alone. The symptoms for most people include diarrhea, fever and stomach cramps within a day or two of being exposed.

    A Vietnamese suspected of vibrio cholera from the northern province of Ninh Binh died on May 18, according to the Preventive Medicine and Environment Department under the Ministry of Health. Samples taken from the patient tested positive for vibrio cholera at the Central Hygiene and Epidemiology Institute.

    The combined effect of Citricidal® wih irradiation on Clostridium perfringens growth from spores in a sous-vide processed marinated pork meat Mexican entrée was investigated. Citricidal was added at 200 or 800 ppm after mixing pork meat with tomatillo sauce and inoculated with 3 log10 CFU/g of C. perfringens spores.

    The aim of this study was to individuate a method to improve the shelf life of fresh truffles, hypogeous fungi highly prized but very perishable as well. Microbial ecology of fresh products was investigated and the effect of irradiation at different doses on microbial and sensorial parameters was assayed.

    OTTAWA -- The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) has confirmed bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE) in an 80-month-old dairy cow from Alberta. No part of the animal’s carcass entered the human food or animal feed systems.
