    PULLMAN, Wash.—Researchers at Washington State University have found that a compound in garlic is 100 times more effective than two popular antibiotics at fighting the Campylobacter bacterium, one of the most common causes of intestinal illness. Their work was recently published in the Journal of Antimicrobial Chemotherapy.

    SWISS food and drinks giant Nestle SA says it plans to invest hundreds of millions of dollars to expand its medicinal nutrition business over the next decade. Nestle says it is creating a specialised institute in Switzerland and a subsidiary called Nestle Health Science SA "to pioneer a new industry between food and pharma''.

    Health conscious consumers have long known that virgin olive oil is a good choice when it comes to preparing meals and dipping breads. Now, a team of researchers, including one with the Agricultural Research Service (ARS), has found that phenolic components in olive oil actually modify genes that are involved in the inflammatory response.

    I’ll miss Jamie Lee Curtis talking about her diarrhea. The BBC reports that Danone has withdrawn requests to approve claims about the health benefits of two of its brands. Danone has promoted that yoghurt drink Actimel strengthens the body's natural defences, while Activia aids digestion.

    Important changes have been made for the regulation of food-type dietary supplements. Health, sports and other foods supplemented with substances such as vitamins, minerals or proteins for benefits beyond simple nutrition are to come under new rules. On 31 March a long overdue change to the regulation of dietary supplements comes into force.
