    The pork industry was facing plenty of challenges before the swine flu outbreak became a story over the weekend. Now the industry is attempting to engage — and correct — the vast social media networks that are spreading misinformation about the virus.

They watch what happened to shippers of commodities such as tomatoes, hot peppers and peanuts, and work to make sure their operations are up to date on food safety procedures.     SPRINGDALE -- Instilling a culture of food safety and educating people - not merely training them - are the keys to improving the nation's food safety, according to two professionals who delivered their ideas to the Ozark Food Processors Association on April 8. The Ozark Food Processors Association gathered for its 103rd Convention and Exposition.

    BLAKELY, Ga. -- When Food and Drug Administration inspectors visited Peanut Corp. of America's plant here in late 2001, they noticed peanut-processing equipment had been improperly repaired with duct or cellophane tape.

    Last year's outbreak of listeriosis shook up millions of Canadians who had previously assumed that the food in our stores and restaurants is safe to eat. The listeriosis outbreak killed 21 people; hundreds more were made ill. It was one of the biggest cases of food-borne illness in Canada, spreading to seven provinces before contaminated meat products were pulled out of stores.

    Within days of the initial reports of a listeria outbreak at a Maple Leafs Foods plant last summer, the company was facing its first class-action lawsuit. It was followed by 13 more lawsuits on behalf of plaintiffs from every province in the country.

    Glen Watts, president, Neighbour to Neighbour, Hamilton, The Hamilton Spectator writes regarding, 'Food safety practices need to be applied to food banks, too' (Letters, April 22), to say that food banks do focus on food safety practices. Our food bank in the Neighbour to Neighbour Centre on the Hamilton Mountain has clear internal and external policies.
