    PORTLAND, Maine -- An Augusta woman who says she contracted an E. Coli infection after eating meat produced by New York-based Fairbank Farms has filed a lawsuit against the company. Last month, Fairbank Farms of Ashville, N.Y., recalled almost 546,000 pounds of fresh ground beef that had been distributed in September to stores from North Carolina to Maine.

    Private lab tests of ground beef recalled this week by a Fairbury packer came back negative for E. coli, contradicting an Agriculture Department test that caused the recall.

    FAIRBURY, Neb. -- A Nebraska company says it has recovered the 90 pounds of ground beef listed in a federal recall report because of possible E. coli contamination. The U.S. Department of Agriculture says Fairbury Steaks is recalling 10-pound packages of bulk fresh ground beef.

    Two further cases of E. coli have been confirmed in people who bought food from a bakery in Gateshead. So far nine adults have been confirmed as having the O157 strain of the infection, with a further six people currently undergoing tests. The Health Protection Agency (HPA) said two people were receiving hospital treatment, with the remainder recovering at home.
