    MEXICO CITY -- Mexico shut down schools, museums, libraries and state-run theaters across it overcrowded capital Friday in hopes of containing a swine flu outbreak that authorities say killed at least 20 people — and perhaps dozens more. World health authorities worried openly that the strange new virus could become a global epidemic.

    HANOI -- A 23-year-old woman has died from H5N1 bird flu in northern Vietnam, state-run radio said on Friday, the country's fourth human fatality this year. The woman, from Thanh Hoa province, fell sick and died earlier this month, and tests showed she had been infected by the H5N1 virus, Voice of Vietnam said, quoting the Health Ministry.

    Scientists have achieved what they describe as a major milestone in animal genetics: decoding the genome of the cow. The findings provide “tantalizing clues to explain ‘the essence of bovinity,’ ” according to an essay in the journal Science, which is publishing several articles on the work.

    Researchers funded by the Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council (BBSRC) have gained a key insight into a disease that is devastating the UK's fish farming industry. The researchers have discovered that fish can harbour and spread proliferative kidney disease (PKD), a cause of major stock losses on fish farms, as well as being affected by the infection.

    WASHINGTON -- The U.S. Department of Agriculture and the National Institutes of Health (NIH) announced today that an international consortium of researchers has published the genome of domestic cattle, the first livestock mammal to have its genetic blueprint sequenced and analyzed.

    Scientists from the University of Maryland have published their assembly of the domestic cow (Bos taurus), an important new resource for the genetics community. The new version of the cow genome improves considerably on other assemblies, in terms of both completeness and accuracy.

    The West Virginia Department of Agriculture (WVDA) is investigating the death of approximately 20 head of cattle in the southern part of the state, and the current prime suspect is toxin contained in reed canarygrass.

    Improving the detection and control of foot and mouth disease (FMD) in cattle could result from technology being developed and tested by Agricultural Research Service (ARS) scientists. The United States hasn't had an outbreak of FMD since 1929, but being prepared for an outbreak is a priority for the U.S. government.
