    Today's Toronto Star has an article about a reptile club in a Toronto Elementary School. Teacher Jim Karkavitsas runs a session every day that teaches students about a range of reptiles. His menagerie has expanded from one snake five years ago to more than 40 different species in his classroom.

    The Canadian Food Inspection Agency says it has found 31 missing sheep it had under quarantine because of scrapie. It says only that they were found on a farm, but not whose or where because the CFIA says police are involved. The CFIA intended to destroy the flock in Eastern Ontario, but on the eve of destruction, the sheep went missing.

    People like to talk about 'one medicine' a lot. That's the concept that we're all animals, and that human and veterinary medicine should be one big happy family of healthcare providers that maintain the health of the entire family, human and non-human. I get a bit jaded talking about one medicine because there's a lot of talk but it's hard to get a lot of action.

    Identifying antimicrobial proteins in chickens that kill pathogens is one method being used by U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) scientists to find alternatives to the use of antibiotics to control infectious poultry diseases. Each year, poultry diseases such as coccidiosis cause losses of more than $600 million in the United States and $3.2 billion worldwide.
