    In comments filed with USDA’s Food Safety and Inspection Service the American Meat Institute urged the agency to reject two petitions filed by the Humane Society of the United States and Farm Sanctuary calling for livestock that cannot walk when they arrive at plants to be euthanized.

    With meat consumption rising worldwide and poultry meat the most popular by far, there is pressure to increase production. This must be done alongside commensurate improvements in animal welfare. Today ( 22 February ), researchers describe an ingenious small-scale camera and computer set-up that is poised to improve the welfare of farm animals including, in particular, broiler chickens.

    The UPS store has many informative flyers, signs and brochures. One is a Ghostbusters’ circle with a line through it to indicate, no animals: UPS will not courier pets. I asked the woman who was preparing my package if the sign was really necessary and she said, yes. Some people try to mail pets elsewhere; on a UPS truck, in a box.

    VANCOUVER -- According to a recent Harris/Decima poll commissioned by the VHS, and funded by the Vancouver Foundation, 71% of Canadians said they are concerned about the humane treatment of farm animals and two-thirds (65%) said a political candidate's stance on farm animal welfare practices would factor into their voting decision.

    Smithfield Foods on Wednesday released findings of independent and internal investigations into alleged abuse of sows on a company-owned farm in Waverly, Va. The probes by Murphy-Brown LLC, Smithfield’s livestock production arm, and an independent team of experts including Temple Grandin and Jennifer Woods followed the Dec.

    Animal welfare campaigners had some reason to be concerned over the contents of the new pig welfare code. Matters had dragged on since televised images of distressed pigs in sow stalls prompted a public outcry 18 months ago.

    In early 2008, the Humane Society of the United States released video documenting animal abuse at Hallmark/Westland Meat Packing Co. of Chino, Calif., secretly shot by an undercover employee. That $100-million-a-year company does not exist anymore – brought down by someone using an over-the-counter video recording device.
