    A 75-year-old woman has tested positive for Shiga toxin-producing Escherichia coli (STEC). The Centre for Health Protection (CHP) of the Department of Health has confirmed that the patient had no recent travel history and her home contacts were asymptomatic.

    Nineteen cases of infection with E. coli O157 have been detected in Limburg, Belgium, of which three have developed hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS). The Federal Agency for Security of the Food Chain (AFSCA) said Thursday that all cases are related to the ingestion of filet américain (lit. American fillet) with onions and more seasoning than a normal steak tartare.

    I like gray food. Sometimes. Pot roast, gravy, mushy peas, mashed potatoes – it’s comfort food for the Brisbane winter (high 70F, low 48F). It’s gray. And piping hot. But I also like hamburgers that aren’t hockey pucks, pork that isn’t leather, poultry that melts rather than substitute as a rubber ball.

    Park et al. report in the Journal of Paristology regarding a case of oral stings by spermatophores of the squid Todarodes pacificus. A 63-yr-old Korean woman experienced severe pain in her oral cavity immediately after eating a portion of parboiled squid along with its internal organs. She did not swallow the portion, but spat it out immediately.

    Current Situation The Southern Nevada Health District (SNHD), Office of Epidemiology, has investigated 5 reports of salmonellosis associated with aquatic turtles. All of the turtles were purchased within the last 8 months. The newest case, in a 5-month-old patient, came to our attention on May 31.

    Nine-year-old Ugo Picot was stricken with E. coli O157:H7 linked to frozen meatballs in tomato sauce in June 2011. Ugo was one of eight children in Northern France confirmed with E. coli O157 after eating beef bought from German retailer, Lidl.
