    SACRAMENTO -- Dr. Ron Chapman, state public health officer and director of California Department of Public Health (CDPH), today warned people not to eat certain bagged salads manufactured by River Ranch Fresh Foods, LLC because they may be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes. To date, no illnesses have been reported.

On May 17, 2012, FSIS determined a change in status from a Class III to a Class II recall was warranted because a meat ingredient did not receive federal inspection.     On March 22, 2005, Anna Ayala claimed she found a finger in a bowl of chili at a San Jose Wendy’s restaurant. The finger became the talk of the Internet and late-night talk shows, spawned numerous bizarre tips and theories about the source of the finger, and led to dozens of copycat claims. Wendy’s lost tens of millions of dollars.

    The number of people now known to have got sick after visiting a rural Thunder Bay restaurant last weekend has climbed to 141, up 15 from Thursday. The Thunder Bay District Health Unit is investigating whether a norovirus caused the outbreak. The virus has turned up in lab work done on two people who attended the Mother's Day buffet at This Old Barn.

    At this time of the year, seeds of all kinds are settling into the soil or will soon enter the earth -- from farmers planting crops in their fields to backyard gardeners nursing vegetables, fruits and spices to fruition behind their homes. And for 20 years, such a variety of edibles from a wide array of producers could be found at the Greeley Farmers Market following harvests.

    MUNCIE -- Delaware Country Club, Wes-Del High School, Captain D's, Carino's and Eva's Pancake House were cited for hand washing or glove violations during recent sanitation inspections by the Delaware County Health Department. At the country club, an inspector saw employees preparing and serving lettuce, buns, deli sandwiches, potato chips and other food with their bare hands.

    Animal welfare breaches have been uncovered in all 10 of the state's red meat abattoirs, a government review has found. The NSW Food Authority has confirmed that an audit of practices in red meat abattoirs across the state has resulted in the issuing of improvement notices over animal welfare issues across the board.

    A total of 316 persons infected with the outbreak strains of Salmonella Bareilly (304 persons) or Salmonella Nchanga (12 persons) have been reported from 26 states and the District of Columbia, up from 258 earlier this month. Is raw really better? I don’t know too many microbiologists who go in for the raw sushi, or raw anything.

    In 2008, a new craze swept the nail industry as women (and men) put their feet into water containing fish that ate the dead skin off feet. Washington State, and others, said no way, and would not approve the process. Now there’s some data to back up the ban.
