    The first lawsuit spawned by a salmonella outbreak that appears to be linked to sushi -- which has now sickened 141 people in 20 states plus the District of Columbia -- was filed late Wednesday against Moon Marine U.S.A. Corp, a Cupertino, Calif., seafood importer.

    Workers on a gas production platform in the Bass Strait want their barge returned to port after a major outbreak of salmonella and gastroenteritis. One construction worker on the Origin Energy project has been flown to hospital in Melbourne. In total, 36 of more than 200 workers have fallen ill in the two weeks since the outbreak, their union said.

    Shanghai's food safety watchdog is tightening up its crackdown against harmful food-production practices, increasing inspections and offering rewards for people who report problems. Since the beginning of last year, authorities have cracked 80 food-safety cases and arrested 180 businessmen, Yan Zuqiang, director of the Shanghai Food Safety Office, said yesterday.

    A new survey shows Canadians might be willing to eat food with small doses of radiation to prevent foodborne illnesses. The survey was conducted by Angus Reid Public Opinion for the Consumers Association of Canada. It found that while Canadians are concerned about food contamination, most don't know much about food irradiation.

    Daughter Courtlynn loves her some Subway. She’ll be pleased to know there’s one at the end of our street, open for brekkie at 7 a.m., and usually occupied by several high school students when I take Sorenne to school at 7:50 a.m. And it’s the same kids, every day.
