FDA has put in its budget request for Fiscal Year 2013 (Oct. 1, 2012 – Sept. 30, 2013). The request for a budget of $4.5 billion, a 17% increase over FY 2012, may seem to be asking for a lot from a government that is attempting to cut its deficit, however the request relies heavily on user fees to fund it, especially in the foods program.

While increased government regulation and inspection may help improve food safety, the best course of action for the food industry is self-monitoring and vigilance.

OMG. That’s as good as any description of my reaction to Jimmy John Liautaud’s handling of a recent E. coli outbreak linked to clover sprouts served by the eponymous restaurant chain he founded. It seems Liautaud is leery of making any formal announcements in the wake of the outbreak that sickened a dozen people, including two that were hospitalized.

A bill updating Michigan's food-safety rules could become state Rep. Cindy Denby's first proposal signed into law since she took office three years ago. Denby, R-Handy Township, spearheaded House Bill 5130, which would update the state Food Law of 2000 to correspond with federal food-code changes from 2009.

The melon category suffered a predictable decline in retail sales and volume in 2011 because of a listeria outbreak, and berries were again a star performer in fresh produce departments. Berries are the largest produce category, and it gained 7.1% in dollars and 3.7% in volume, according to Steve Lutz, executive vice president of the Chicago-based Nielsen Perishables Group.

Two local restaurants had to close Thursday after failing routine Brazos County Health Department inspections. The department reported that On the Border, a College Station Mexican restaurant located across from Texas A&M, was forced to shut down for 24 hours after inspectors discovered roaches coming from a hole in the kitchen and in other areas of the facility.

Think about the role of process control as the canary in the mine shaft: the canary’s untimely death indicates a dangerous situation in the mine shaft, much like HACCP alerts a plant manager of a potential hazard.

Larry “Larry” Goodridge (right, exactly as shown) got it right when he said farmers bear primary responsibility for food safety and they shouldn’t rely on third-party audits, but should retroactively fail my risk analysis course for saying Colorado’s response to the listeria-in-cantaloupe outbreak that killed 36 people "was as close to perfect as we are going to see

Captain Kirk told the ladies of The View on Monday that his one-man Broadway show, Move out of your parent’s basement and get a life Shatner’s World: We Just Live in It, was spoiled by food poisoning. The armchair epidemiologist figured it was a Klingon hamburger.

Two foodborne illness outbreaks in Granville, Ohio during the past two weeks have been blamed on norovirus. Test results from an Ohio Department of Health laboratory found Norovirus in samples from both an outbreak resulting from a catered Feb. 12 event at Bryn Du Mansion and from a separate incident among students at Denison University.
