I awoke at 1:20 a.m. to the sound of two possums apparently raping each other. They prefer to do it on the tin roofs that grace the homes in Brisbane. It’s not like cats in Kansas, it’s louder and sounds more violent. But they’re so cute.

Paul Schwarz used to eat a lot of cantaloupe, but not anymore. At least some of the melons Schwarz enjoyed for breakfast this summer came from Jensen Farms, the Colorado grower whose cantaloupe contaminated with listeria bacteria have been responsible for the nation’s deadliest food-borne disease outbreak in 26 years.

It seems that all too often food plants implicated in foodborne disease outbreaks had recently undergone and passed inspections conducted by an independent third-party auditor. Then when regulatory agencies conduct an investigation of the facility, they find major sanitation and processing failures.

When a food safety outbreak is first made known, speed is imperative. A good traceback system allows potentially contaminated product to be pulled from the market, keeping consumers safe, and it allows product not implicated to remain in the marketplace, keeping consumers confident in the product.

In my opinion, Jensen Farms is ultimately the responsible party but is not a produce industry pariah. There are many parties that bear responsibility for the tragedy imposed upon the victims, and their families, after eating listeria-contaminated cantaloupe.

Since the foot-and-mouth disease outbreak of 2001 in the United Kingdom, there has been debate about the sharing, between government and industry, both the costs of livestock disease outbreaks and responsibility for the decisions that give rise to them.

Basketball is mind-numbingly dull to watch. But it can be mildly entertaining if players are vomiting. A new study describes a 2010 outbreak involving several NBA teams (that’s the professionals, the ones who aren’t playing and no one notices), the first known report of a norovirus outbreak in a professional sports association.
