    The numbers of dead and dying continue to spin out of control in Europe as no one seems to know how this happened. German Health Minister Daniel Bahr said Monday that authorities still haven't pinned down definitively the source of the E. coli infection — and "we unfortunately still have to expect a rising number of cases."

    E. coli investigations are under way in Germany, where 16 have died, as well as Spain and the EU Commission. Germany has targeted Spanish produce, but Spain says the supply chain could be a culprit.

    The entire European Union is struggling to come to terms with Germany’s E. coli outbreak amid reports that a 14th person had died and hundreds remained ill. "One problem with Spanish cucumbers, and all of Europe is trembling," Belgium's Agriculture Minister Sabine Laruelle said on the sidelines of an informal meeting in Debrecen, eastern Hungary.

    COPENHAGEN -- The number of confirmed E.coli cases has risen to 11 with at least another eight persons suspected of having the intestinal infection in Denmark, according to Denmark's National Serum Institute on Sunday. Five of the confirmed cases show symptoms of kidney failure which marks an advanced stage of the sickness, the institute said.

    Austrian authorities sent inspectors to 33 organic supermarkets Monday to make sure Spanish vegetables suspected of contamination with a potentially fatal bacteria have been taken off shelves. The move came on the heels of a recall and sales ban of cucumbers, tomatoes and eggplants that originated in Spain and were delivered to stores in the Alpine republic by German companies.
