    The Hawaiian Department of Health said a Hale­iwa restaurant linked to 42 cases of suspected norovirus in an outbreak on the North Shore has been scrubbed and is safe, but other eating establishments and food sources are still being investigated.

    Sports is about more than showering with other people. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control revealed today that 21 players on 13 pro basketball teams were sickened with norovirus last fall. The federal researchers didn't name the teams. But media reports have said players with a stomach bug at the time included four on the Orlando Magic, including star center Dwight Howard.

    It is most commonly referred to as Delhi Belly or Moctezuma's Revenge, but perhaps travellers' diarrhoea should be renamed the Costa Cramps after it was revealed that most holidaymakers fall ill in Spain. A staggering 32 per cent of Britons said they had been unwell while staying on the Iberian Peninsula, compared to just six per cent in Italy and three per cent in Thailand.

    The American Meat Institute is challenging the conclusions of a small study that found nearly half of meat and poultry samples purchased at grocery stores in five U.S. cities contained the Staphylococcus aureus bacteria.

    In 2003, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) issued a quantitative assessment of the relative health risk from Listeria monocytogenes in 23 categories of ready-to-eat (RTE) foods. The agencies are preparing to update that risk assessment, to incorporate data and information that have emerged since then.

    Guernsey's food safety laws need to be updated "urgently" to avoid a ban on exports, according to a States report. The Health and Social Services Department wants to draft a new law to replace 20 pieces of "old legislation".

    An outbreak of food poisoning (emetic syndrome) occurred in three kindergartens (A, B and C) in Berlin, Germany, on 3 December 2007 after an excursion during which food was served. We conducted a retrospective cohort study among the kindergarten children and personnel who participated in the trip. The overall attack rate among the 155 participants was 30%.

    Chicago -- Consumers' interest and concern over the safety of their food is only going to grow, says Mintel Director, CPG Trend Insight Lynn Dornblaser.     The provincial government deserves credit for strengthening legislation aimed at ensuring food safety in our restaurants, but if the recent auditor general's report is any indication, it needs to back that up with stronger enforcement. Without that, the law will be rendered ineffective.
