    Ninety-six people are in police custody, awaiting prosecution or in prison for illegally using melamine-tainted milk powder, said the State Council's Food Safety Commission on Thursday. They were found to have used melamine-tainted milk powder as raw material to produce dairy products or sell such dairy products, said a statement issued by the commission.

    Guangzhou police have captured a man who was attempting blackmail after poisoning foods in a local supermarket, the Southern Daily reported. So far, there have been no reports of people poisoned.

    The company at the center of the scandal over dioxin-contaminated animal feed has filed for bankruptcy. It is facing criminal investigations and could face civil claims from farms which have been forced to close. Harles and Jentzsch, the company accused of supplying dioxin-contaminated fat to the animal-feed industry in Germany, filed in court for insolvency on Wednesday.

    It is often said it is grim up north. But it appears it is rather grubby too. Northern men have dirtier hands than their southern counterparts, a study found. Men in Newcastle have more than four times as many bugs lurking on their palms and between their fingers as those from Birmingham, while the paws of Scouse males are twice as dirty as those of Londoners.

    I guess I thought it was cool in high school (and it seems much nerdier now) but I was a member of my school's dance committee. Not the dancing team, but the group that organized the dances. Living in small town Ontario (that's in Canada) there wasn't a whole lot to do on Friday nights so the dances were pretty well attended.

    Dioxin levels in eggs reaching the UK from affected German farms were "more than likely" well below levels considered safe, the European Commission has said. About 136,000 eggs had been sent to the Netherlands for processing and a batch was then passed on to the UK for use in food such as mayonnaise and pastries.

    The petting farm at the center of an E.c oli O157 outbreak that sickened 93 in Aug. 2009 and left several children seriously ill will not be disputing liability in the legal case against it, lawyers have said. Seventy-six of those taken ill after visiting Godstone Farm, near Redhill, Surrey were children under the age of 10.
