    El Camion is one of nearly 300 mobile food trucks and carts that the county has listed. King County says keeping tabs on these rolling businesses means making sure food carts are inspected once a year and food trucks three times a year at least. The results of those surprise inspections are then posted on the county's website for the public to read.

    All 88 girl students of the hostel run by Karvenagar-based Maharshi Karve Stree Shikshan Sanstha (MKSSS), admitted to two hospitals on Friday for food poisoning, were discharged on Saturday. The students had consumed masurachi aamti (brown lentil curry) on Friday afternoon and poha at 6 pm the same day.

    A 70-year-old Washington state man has been sentenced to a year in prison followed by six months of home detention after admitting the honey he imported was from China — not Thailand or the Philippines, as he claimed. Chung Po Liu of Bellevue also must pay $400,000 in restitution.

    Sales of organic foods rose 5.1% in 2009 and now make up almost 4% of total U.S. food sales, according to the Organic Trade Association. Sales of organic fruits and vegetables are projected to grow by 13% yearly next year and the year after, and sales of organic food overall by 7%, says Barbara Haumann of the association.

    Washington, D.C. -- The U.S. Food and Drug Administration is trying to get pharmaceutical companies to voluntarily stop providing antibiotics to promote livestock growth. In a recent meeting with consumer advocates, the agency indicated it is negotiating with one company to remove growth promotion as a labeled use for one antibiotic.

    The Food Standards Agency, the UK poultry industry, and major retailers have agreed a new target that will measure efforts to reduce the levels of the food bug campylobacter in chickens.     A lack of funds and expertise has limited Vietnam’s ability to test food safety and hygiene, experts say. Vietnam is still passive in detecting food safety and hygiene problems, with agencies dealing with them after receiving reports, Nguyen Cong Khan, head of the Vietnam Food Administrator under the Ministry of Health, said at a conference in Hanoi Thursday.

    Campylobacter jejuni is a significant cause of bacterial enteritis worldwide. Very little is known about the pathogenicity mechanisms and virulence factors of this important enteropathogen. C. jejuni isolates from 166 Finnish patients, collected from July to December in 2006, were studied for the presence of putative virulence factors and susceptibility to antimicrobials.

    Consumer Federation of America applauded the U.S. Senate for passing the FDA Food Safety Modernization Act (S. 510) by unanimous consent tonight. The bill must now be voted on by the House before being sent to the President for his signature.  The House has passed the legislation twice before and is expected to do so again.

    Kroger has recalled several brands of pet food that were sold in Nashville and other parts of the South, saying that may be contaminated with aflatoxin, which can cause serious illness or death. The Cincinnati-based grocer provides a list of all the foods being recalled here, which includes both dog and cat food.
