    The AVMA Executive Board has submitted a resolution to the House of Delegates in recognition of World Veterinary Year in 2011. The HOD will consider Resolution 2 at its regular winter session this January in Chicago. The House Advisory Committee has recommended approval of this resolution.

    Braunwynn, the college freshman daughter, e-mailed last night (although in Canada she’s called a first-year university student). "Watched this documentary, Food Inc., today. Seemed like one of those things you would get quoted on. Was a particularly emotional part about this mom whose 2-year-old son died from E. coli O157:H7 in a burger. Made me think of you."

    I went to graduate school because the girl I was living with was a veterinary student who had another three years of schooling ahead, so I thought I needed a reason to hang around. That’s not a good reason to go to graduate school. I married the girl and had kids but dropped out of grad school. Distance education may have helped.

    Commercial feed appears to be a source of Salmonella contamination in commercial swine production units, according to a paper in the November 2010 issue of the journal Applied and Environmental Microbiology. Moreover, nearly half of isolates found in pigs were multidrug resistant. The findings suggest that pork could be a source of human infection.

    A new European Food Survey shows that the British take a more measured approach to possible food safety risks than their European neighbours. The food survey, carried out by the European Food Safety Authority, asked about 27,000 consumers across the EU a range of questions relating to the possible risks associated with food.

    The New Mexico Department of Health has confirmed an outbreak strain of E. coli O157:H7 in an intact sample of cheese sold at Costco stores. The Alamogordo Daily News and Associated Press say the outbreak strain had been isolated at other laboratories in already opened packages of cheese, but this is the first confirmation from an intact cheese sample.
