    A salmonella infection in 16 nurseries and primary schools in Szekesfehervar, central Hungary, has made 181 children ill, a local health authority official told MTI on Tuesday. The infection was first reported on September 8 and developed sporadically rather than suddenly, said Gyongyi Lencses. "The curve is now on the down-slope," she added.

    Health Canada said today while telling pregnant women to be especially careful about the 11 million cases of foodborne illness that strike Canadians each year that, “Many of these illnesses could be prevented by following proper food handling and preparation techniques.” Please, please, oh please. Show us mortals the data on which that statement is based?

    GAINESVILLE, Fla. -- University of Florida researchers have discovered that tomato variety and maturity influence the ways salmonella bacteria respond to the fruit. The findings, published Aug. 31 by the online, open-access journal Public Library of Science (PLoS) ONE, suggest researchers may be able to develop tomato cultivars more resistant to salmonella contamination.

    According to this editorial, most of the antibiotics sold in the United States — 70 percent — go to the animals we eat, especially pigs and chickens. To speed up growth and to prevent the spread of disease in crowded conditions, growers put small amounts of antibiotics into animals’ daily feed.

    Officials with the New York State Department of Agriculture have issued a recall of ground beef bought at an Upper Manhattan meat market. The DOA says there are salmonella risks associated with all packages of ground beef sold on September 7 at the Hamilton Corner Meat Market in Manhattanville.

    After an E coli outbreak this spring linked to raw milk, the Traditional Foods Warehouse buying club featured in Dish last year--a source of raw milk, kombucha, and other natural foodies favorites--was raided by Minnesota Department of Agriculture and shut down earlier this summer. Dairy farmer Mike Hartmann, the supplier of the raw milk thought to be the source of the E.

    Public health officials are investigating two separate outbreaks of legionnaires’ disease, Wales’ most senior doctor has confirmed. Dr Tony Jewell, the nation’s chief medical officer, said there appeared to be two distinct but simultaneous outbreaks of the killer disease – in Rhymney and the Cynon Valley.

    More than 96,000 cases of food adulteration are pending in various courts in the country and there is no check on the violators as the Prevention of Food and Adulteration Act proves to be ineffective as its main focus is on the detection of adulteration.     SILVER SPRING, Md. -- As fall arrives, so does the apple season and fresh apple cider.  Unfortunately, serious outbreaks of foodborne illness have been traced to drinking fruit and vegetable juices and cider that have not been processed to kill harmful bacteria.  Consumers are being reminded this fall to read the labels carefully on juice or cider products they purchase.

    Hospital in Hyderabad fell sick from food poisoning after consuming tainted sandwiches, leaving a critical shortage in the gynecology wing. That’s what MedIndia reported. The doctors, who had assembled for a continuing education program in gynecology, apparently ate snacks from a bakery. The eatables were purchased from Mac Allen Bakery at Padmarao Nagar.
