    You can’t open the food sec- tion of your newspaper these days without another sermon on the virtues of eating local. The eulogy takes as self-evident the moral superiority of the gospel of locavorism: relocal- izing the food supply promotes sustainability because it reduces the fossil fuel needed to deliver the food.

    Former President Jimmy Carter is reportedly resting at Cleveland hospital after feeling ill with symptoms resembling a norovirus infection. Carter's grandson, Georgia state Sen. Jason Carter, said his 85-year-old grandfather was doing fine.

    A shocked dad went to make lunch for his children - and found a dead mouse embedded in the loaf of bread. Stephen Forse, 41, bought the Hovis Best of Both loaf at a Tesco grocery store and had already used several slices when he made the gruesome discovery, The Sun reported.

    Fifteen years ago, I visited a pork slaughter plant in Missouri that was designed in cooperation with Temple Grandin.  Temple is a professor at Colorado State University and her area of expertise is animal welfare. The plant I visited was different than any I had ever seen in the way animals were managed.

    In the first-ever study to assess the social impact of food allergies in children, Mount Sinai researchers have found that approximately 35 percent of children with food allergies, who are over the age of five, were reported to have experienced bullying, teasing, or harassment as a result of their allergies.

    The University of Magallanes have developed an innovative project to start farming Patagonian toothfish or Chilean sea bass (Dissostichus eleginoides) in the region. With a budget of CLP 548 million (USD 1.1 million) the promoters of the initiative expect that within 10 years, private entrepreneurs will begin cultivating the species, said the aquaculture engineer Pablo Gallardo.

    A Toronto grocery store was evacuated after some staff and customers became ill Saturday, but the Loblaw store should reopen Monday after being given the all clear. The food chain said four customers and seven employees were affected by symptoms that “include vomiting and to a lesser degree, diarrhea” but all were recovering.
