    MISSISSAUGA –- Food inspection needs to become more science based, Dr. Gary Acuff, a food microbiologist from the Department of Animal Science at Texas A&M told the 51st annual meeting of the Ontario Food Protection Association here recently.

    A type of Woolworths milk is being recalled in Victoria and some NSW stores because of possible contamination. Woolworths and National Foods have issued an immediate recall of two litre bottles of Woolworths Fresh Milk Lite.

    OTTAWA -- A few days after New Years, the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) will stop providing 72-hour advance notification of inspection of US meat imports. Drivers will be selected and advised upon arrival at the border that their meat shipment has been selected for CFIA inspection, reports the Canadian Trucking Alliance.

    It’s been a poopy couple of weeks. Literally. Turns out that I’ve been dealing with a Campylobacter infection for a while which has knocked me on my ass.

    Here’s the story.

    Two weeks ago I was preparing to head to Manhattan (Kansas) to hang out with Doug, chat about a few projects, give a talk and take in the K State/Mizzou football game (with tailgating).

    BLOOMFIELD -- What was supposed to be a happy celebration last Thursday turned into an uncomfortable situation for dozens of county employees. Nearly half of the roughly 300 county employees who attended a potluck last week at the County Administration Building became sick later that day, officials said, and the suspected cause is a poorly prepared turkey.

    One man's intent to prepare a steaming bowl of mushroom soup ended in the emergency room Tuesday. A resident of Karmiel suffered symptoms of poisoning following the consumption of mushroom soup made of fungi gathered from the woods near his house. Magen David Adom (MDA) staff who treated the 51 year old said the man was very lucky, as he did not appear to suffer any long term damage.

    The Restaurant Monitor is a weekly listing of scores for restaurants inspected by the Brazos County Health Department. Inspection scores are on a 100-point scale. Generally, scores below 80 might cause the department to schedule a follow-up visit. A score below 70 results in the suspension of an establishment's health permit.
