    Each year about 200,000 New Zealanders get sick from foodborne bugs and estimates are that almost half of those cases are due to mishandling food in the home. With more people buying smarter, including making bulk purchases, the potential for food safety problems can also be multiplied.

    Two people, one from New Hampshire and another from upstate New York, have died after eating ground beef that may be responsible for an E. coli outbreak linked to illness in more than two dozen people. The suspect beef was produced by a company in western New York State, Fairbank Farms, which issued a voluntary recall Saturday for 545,699 pounds of ground beef products.

    Several state health departments, CDC, and the United States Department of Agriculture's Food Safety and Inspection Service (USDA-FSIS) are investigating a multi-state outbreak of Escherichia coli O157:H7 infections.  On October 31, 2009, FSIS issued a notice about a recall of 545,699 pounds of beef products from Fairbank Farms that may be contaminated with E.

    LANIGAN, Sask. — McDonald's Canada and the president of the Canadian Cattlemen's Association are trying to counter what they say is false information being spread by an Internet hoax. The hoax email purports to be from an Alberta cattle-feeding group and calls for a boycott of the fast-food chain because it says McDonald's has plans to buy most of its beef from South America.

    HONOLULU -- Just three years ago, inspectors used to make unannounced inspections on restaurants about once a year. However, that situation has worsened. There are only 12 Department of Health inspectors on Oahu to keep an eye on almost 6,000 restaurants. That is about half as many inspectors as the state had 20 years ago.

    I've written a few times in the past about the need for better definitions and guidelines for service dogs. Service animals are incredibly beneficial for some people but there is a great potential for abuse by people who don't really need a service animal and/or are using completely untrained and sometimes inappropriate animals.

    Abattoirs could see their bills slashed by millions of pounds a year under Foods Standards Agency plans to shake up meat hygiene regulations. The FSA's Scottish director, Professor Charles Milne, said the agency would set out proposals in its upcoming strategic plan to abolish rules forcing every carcass that passes through an abattoir to be inspected.
