When naïve me and my students started out to improve the microbial safety of Ontario greenhouse tomatoes and cucumbers back in 1997, the former of which still dominate the Manhattan (Kansas) marketplace, we thought, OK, we’ll make a food safety manual.

Oh snap, this is an awesome T-shirt. I know the writing is small, so this is what it says. You know you are a health inspector when… People ask you where to eat and…… you just smile. You interrogate the cook at your own family’s Thanksgiving dinner

For a penny a pound, producers of ground beef could greatly reduce the danger of E. coli contamination, especially the lethal strain of the bacteria that recently took the life of a New Hampshire victim and in 2007 left a 22-year-old dance teacher in Minnesota paralyzed below the waist.

On Wednesday, President Obama pardoned his first Thanksgiving turkey. There is something wrong with this concept. Here is how our beloved national tradition works: One lucky turkey gets to live — and fly first class to Disneyland, where he is grand marshal in the Thanksgiving Day parade (I am not making this up). While another nameless bird gets slaughtered in his place.

As shoppers arrive at the Santa Monica farmers market this morning, usually the busiest market of the year, they may be surprised to see much of the produce swathed in netting, the most visible evidence of a quarantine that was declared last week by the California Department of Food and Agriculture, after the discovery of Mediterranean fruit flies at a location in eastern Santa Monica.

I’ve been doing food safety news for 16 years – aggregating, analyzing, and everything else. Archives are available online going back to Jan. 1, 1996. I believe in  the 4 Rs of food safety communications -- rapid, reliable, repeated and relevant. I believe in using new media. I believe the rose does go on the front, big guy.

Two patients who were infected by a swine flu mutation that was also recently detected in Norway have died in France, health officials say. "This mutation could increase the ability of the virus to affect the respiratory tracts and, in particular, the lung tissue," a statement from the French government's Health Surveillance Institute (InVS) said on Friday.

Whether a restaurant belongs to a large chain or simply a mom and pop operation, it is always beneficial to document cooler temperatures, hot holding temperatures, sanitizer concentration for dishwashers, time/temperature checks on a daily basis. A quality control program never hurts.
