    The debate over whether raw milk is safe for human consumption is as old as pasteurization, which began in the late 1880s. Although some swear by the positive health effects of consuming unpasteurized milk, the Food and Drug Administration warns against it, saying ingestion can cause gastrointestinal disease, including E. coli contamination.

    Revised guidelines for assessing the microbiological safety of ready-to-eat foods placed on the market are being launched by the Health Protection Agency today. This latest revision has a different emphasis than previous versions. They are risk based focusing on public health, consumer protection, and provide advice on actions and investigations which should be considered.

    Scientists in Japan have bred a non-lethal puffer fish, ending the "Russian roulette" risk of eating "torafugu". The fugu is one of the world's most dangerous foods, thanks to a concentration of anhydrotetrodotoxin 4-epitetrodotoxin in the liver or ovaries that is 1,200 times more lethal than cyanide.

    Origin Agritech Limited, a biotech company based in Beijing, has received the Biosafety Certificate from the Chinese Ministry of Agriculture as a final approval for commercial approval of the world's first genetically modified phytase corn. The transgenic corn is the product of a seven-year study by the Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences.

    Australia's Office of Gene Technology Regulator (OGTR) has cleared Dow's genetically modified, WideStrike cotton for commercial release in the country. The cotton expresses the Cry1F and Cry1Ac genes for resistance to insect pests.

    The Philippine Court of Appeals (CA) in a 21 page decision by Associate Justice Vicente Veloso has recently granted the consolidated petitions filed by the Bureau of Plant Industry (BPI) and Bayer, which sought to nullify the decision made by the Quezon City Regional Trial Court (RTC) banning BPI from granting Bayer's application to use LLRice 62 in the country.

    A Cobb County lawmaker has introduced a bill that would legalize the sale of raw milk in Georgia. State Rep. Bobby Franklin said he became interested in the issue after hearing about an October case where state agriculture officials forced Eric Wagoner, who runs the online farmers market Athens Locally Grown, to pour out unpasteurized milk he was delivering from South Carolina.

    Today, the European Commission adopted a financial package of €275 million to support programmes to eradicate, control and monitor animal diseases in 2010.
