    The Food Standards Agency and Health Protection Agency (HPA) are investigating a recent increase in the number of cases of a certain type of salmonella in England and Wales. The increase in cases of Salmonella Enteritidis phage type (PT) 14b, since mid-August 2009, was noted by the HPA as part of its monitoring of infectious diseases.

    Pontypool couple Scott and Leanne Bessant hold the baby son they feared they would never have after salmonella put their IVF plans on hold. They describe Cailan as a 'miracle' because after four years of trying, two of which were spent on an IVF waiting list, Mrs Bessant fell pregnant naturally and gave birth at the end of September.

    A four-year-old girl who almost died on a holiday flight arrived home yesterday after a week-long ordeal. Little Vegas MacBeth was flown back to Scotland with her parents Karin and Alex by British Airways, who came to the rescue when holiday firm Thomson refused to foot the bill.

    A scientific paper addressing a unique occupational autoimmune illness contracted by people working in an Austin, Minn., slaughterhouse is scheduled to go online Monday night. Some people working in the pig-brain harvesting area of Quality Pork Processors in Austin became ill, as did people doing the same job at two other U.S. plants.

    YONKERS, N.Y. -- Consumer Reports' latest test of fresh, whole broilers bought in 22 states reveals that two-thirds of birds tested harbored salmonella and/or campylobacter, the leading bacterial causes of food-borne disease.     Eleven food samples have been found to contain excessive metallic contamination, antioxidants or toxins, the Centre for Food Safety warns. In its October food safety report released today, it said the 10 foods were taken from 4,900 samples of vegetables, fruit, meat, poultry, seafood, dairy products, frozen confections, cereals and grains.

    A Northern Ireland-based haulier has been fined £25,000 (€27,500) after poor working practices led to the contamination of an animal feed load. The Armagh-based company pleaded guilty to failing to comply with EC and animal by-product regulations.

    Sri Lanka has suspended importing live chicken from France owing to the threat of bird flu, the Animal Production and Health Department said. The Animal Production and Health Department said that chicken imported from France has been suspended following a warning that had been issued by the World Animal Health Organization (WAHO), due to the spread of bird flu in the country.

    Buyers from Norwegian wool clothing company, De Vold, are in Tasmania talking with wool growers and brokers about sourcing more wool. De Vold sells a million garments a year, using 650 tonnes of wool from 16 to 30 microns for next-of-skin wear, right through to very heavy woollen garments, mostly for its domestic market in Norway.

    BRUSSELS -- The European Commission on Monday approved Swiss company Syngenta's genetically modified maize type MIR604, a move that could enable the resumption of imports of soymeal and soybeans for animal feed. The Commission, executive arm of the 27-nation European Union, said in a statement that it had authorised the maize type for food and feed uses and imports and processing.

    A proposed private member’s bill from the NDP Opposition that would allow unregulated meat sales is an unwanted return to the past, two local farmers said Thursday. The bill by Powell River-Sunshine Coast MLA Nicholas Simons would allow small producers to slaughter and sell small amounts of meat products, bypassing regulations brought in two years ago.

    Conway -- A Pulaski County family's delivery of farm-fresh raw milk to customers in Springfield is clashing with a state law barring commercial distribution of the commodity.
