    A 3-year-old Minnesota boy was hospitalized this month with an E. coli O157:H7 infection  that preliminary tests have traced to an apple orchard and petting zoo in the greater Twin Cities area.

    Washoe County Health District officials are cracking down on people operating illegal food-service carts near parks and schools. Since August, health officials have sent surveillance teams to find these carts, which are operated near elementary schools when school lets out and near Miguel Ribera Park.

    Srinagar -- At least 60 people, including 10 children, fell ill due to food poisoning in Jammu and Kashmir's Baramulla district, police said today. The incident happened yesterday at Krishhama-Kunzar area, 40 km from here, in the district. About 60 people fell unconscious after having dinner at a marriage function there, they said.

    Farmer Tim Burrack of Arlington wasn't happy with Monday's episode of "CSI: Miami." In the show, the villain was genetically engineered corn, which, when fed to cows, produced deadly botulism. Horatio Caine and his hip lab team at CSI cracked the case, all within an hour. Of course, the president of the food conglomerate was the target of Horatio's scorn.

    Schwarcz  writes that over the last few years, I've spoken at various agricultural conferences and have met many farmers. None of them said things like, "Gee, I don't think I'm spending enough on pesticides," or "Is there any way I can increase my exposure to pesticides?"

    Australian farmers may be forced by an international environmental treaty to stop using a dangerous insecticide that more than 60 nations have already banned. Endosulfan has been linked to breast cancer, immunosuppression and birth defects and was recently implicated in a plague of two-headed fish larvae in a Noosa River hatchery.
