    NEW ORLEANS -- Louisiana officials are blasting a Food and Drug Administration plan to ban raw oysters harvested in the Gulf of Mexico during the warm months because they may contain potentially deadly bacteria.

    Three more lawsuits have been filed against the owners of a Milan, Ill., McDonald's where several customers contracted hepatitis A this summer. The lawsuits were filed by the Rock Island law firm of Michael Warner J. Warner and Associates in Rock Island County Circuit Court. They each name JKLM, Inc., the franchise owner, as a defendant.

    After I did a blog post on a one-two punch of bad experiences I had at the Friendy's on Western Avenue in Guilderland, Ron Oliveri, the regional director of operations for Friendly Ice Cream Corp., asked if I'd be willing to get together and talk about the exceptionally slow service I experienced (despite a near-empty restaurant), as well as how my lost credit card was handled.

    The first hard winter wheat varieties bred and developed for production in the eastern United States have been released by the Agricultural Research Service (ARS). NuEast, a hard red winter wheat, and Appalachian White, a hard white winter wheat, were bred by ARS plant pathologist and geneticist David Marshall, research leader of the Plant Science Research Unit in Raleigh, N.C.

    I shop at Dillons in Manhattan (Kansas), owned by Kroger. I’ve gotten to know the staff, we talk food safety stuff, and I’ve really enjoyed the few times I’ve chatted with Gale Prince, who used to be head of food safety at Kroger.

    Some American colleagues have said killing 22 customers with deli-meat would have led to a non-existent company. Not so in Canada, where $5.5 billion companies like Maple Leaf Foods can say with a straight face that listeria presented new challenges in the ready-to-eat food category.

    A four-year-old Summerland boy who had battled an e.coli infection earlier this year is now in good health. “It’s just incredible,” said Jamie Jordan, mother of four-year-old Garnet Jordan. “He’s doing very well, far beyond what we thought at this point.”

    Government and trade officials are down-playing any likelihood of trade impacts after confirmation that a prion illness, atypical scrapie, occurs in New Zealand sheep. It is the first confirmed case of a prion disease in New Zealand farm animals since 119 sheep flocks were culled 50 years ago to eradicate an incursion of classical scrapie.

    CSIRO researchers have identified wheat and barley lines resistant to Crown Rot – a disease that costs Australian wheat and barley farmers $79 million in lost yield every year. Crown Rot, which is a chronic problem throughout the Australian wheat belt, is caused by the fungus Fusarium.

    MALAWI -- An analysis of three and half decades of maize research in African farming communities finds big benefits. A multi-country study, in Agricultural Economics, reports the significant role international maize research plays in reducing poverty. It finds that since the mid-1990s, more than one million people per year have escaped poverty through the adoption of new maize varieties.
