    BY 2040 there could well be 9 billion people on the planet. The challenge, as oil runs out and climate change kicks in, is not just to grow enough food to feed so many people but to do it without wreaking more havoc on the planet.

    AMSTERDAM/BRUSSELS -- Spanish authorities detected traces of unauthorised forms of genetically modified (GM) corn in U.S. soy shipments on August 25 and blocked the imports, a European Commission spokeswoman said on Friday.

    Five people have contracted E.coli O157 after eating at a restaurant in a Welsh seaside resort. Two children from the same family, who live in West Yorkshire, have been confirmed with the potentially lethal bug after visiting Tenby.

    Public health officials on Thursday warned consumers to avoid the "Queen Victoria" and "Tubby" brands of bunched spinach distributed by a Salinas company and sold in California, 11 other states and in Canada because they may be contaminated with salmonella bacteria. No illnesses from the spinach have been reported to authorities, California officials said.

    A farm in Nottinghamshire has closed because of a suspected E.coli outbreak, the Health Protection Agency has said. It is understood two people have become infected after visiting the White Post Farm at Farnsfield. The farm closed voluntarily and the HPA and its partners are conducting a full epidemiological investigation.

    Parents at a nursery in Greater Manchester have been alerted after a child came down with suspected E.coli. The youngster, who has not been identified, was taken ill after returning to the Brooklands Nursery in Bryn, Wigan, from a family holiday.

    The Director of Food and Environmental Hygiene, Mr Cheuk Wing-hing, commended food traders for their positive response to the promotion of Five Keys to Food Safety.

    MORRISON, Wis. -- All it took was an early thaw for the drinking water here to become unsafe. There are 41,000 dairy cows in Brown County, which includes Morrison, and they produce more than 260 million gallons of manure each year, much of which is spread on nearby grain fields. Other farmers receive fees to cover their land with slaughterhouse waste and treated sewage.

    Farmers are being urged to report any unknown livestock health problems to their vets, as new and emerging diseases have been identified. Psoroptic mange and blood sweating are two new problems to watch out for. This was said at the Dairy Event and Livestock Show by David Harwood of the Vet Lab Agency(VLA).

    ITHACA, N.Y. -- A group of upstate New York dog owners thinks it has a can-do plan to profitably compost the tons of dog doo left behind by the roughly 50,000 canines that use the city's pooch park each year. If their pilot project is successful, the Tompkins County Dog Owners Group and Cayuga Compost hope to market usable compost within the next two or three years.

    The Brazilian government has unveiled plans to ban sugar cane plantations in environmentally sensitive areas. The proposal, which must be passed by Congress, comes amid concerns that Brazil's developing biofuels industry is increasing Amazon deforestation. Environment Minister Carlos Minc said the measures would mean ethanol made from sugar cane would be "100% green".

    Harry Dolby, three, has become the latest victim of E.coli at a petting farm after being recetly hospitalised with swine flu. He visited Godstone Farm with his mother Louise and friends on September 4, after the initial E. coli cases came to light.
