    The relentlessly rainy summer has played havoc with the tomato crop in backyard Brooklyn. With the season just about over, the six pampered plants on the back deck and patio have yielded just a handful of undersized tomatoes and only two specimens that qualify as fat and sassy.

    Cattle covered in manure are a turn off. Carcasses possibly washed with manure contaminated water even more so. So much more so, that on more than one occasion the subject of a Nebraska slaughter facility that had that happen to some of its carcasses in 2006 has come up in the responses to one of my blogs.

    Recent food sampling carried out by Cannock Chase Council's Environmental Health team at a butcher's shop in the District revealed E.coli bacteria contamination. Samples including cooked meats, a cleaning cloth and environmental swabs taken from weighing scales revealed poor hygiene standards at Cannock Butchers in Cannock Indoor Shopping Centre in Cannock town centre.

    Kiev -- Food poisoning struck a Ukrainian army combat unit, leaving more than 150 soldiers on sick list, Ukrainian Army officials said Wednesday. Soldiers and officers of the 72nd Mechanized Infantry Brigade based in Bely Tserkov in central Ukraine began suffering gastric complaints after meals in the unit cafeteria.

    Just a day after state agriculture officials started setting hundreds of traps in Orange County for an insect that endangers California's $1.6-billion citrus crop, sources say they have found the insect in Los Angeles County. Routine traps captured a single Asian citrus psyllid on a citrus tree at a home in Echo Park on Monday. The insect was identified as a psyllid today.
