    A Canadian researcher has given Australia's chief food regulator a tick of approval for its assessments of genetically modified foods.
    Dr William Yan, from the Pest Management Regulatory Agency in Ontario, was invited by Food Standards Australia and New Zealand to compare its GM food safety assessment process with international counterparts.

    Researchers have developed a new technique that allows them to make a movie of bacteria infecting their living host. Whilst most studies of bacterial infection are done after the death of the infected organism, this system developed by scientists at the University of Bath and University of Exeter is the first to follow the progress of infection in real-time with living organisms.

    ASUNCIÓN, Paraguay -- Chile used almost 350 times more antibiotics in its farmed salmon in 2008 than Norway, its chief competitor and the largest salmon producer in the world, according to official data from both countries. Chile’s Economy Ministry revealed this month that Chile used almost 718,000 pounds of antibiotics in 2008 and more than 850,000 pounds in 2007.

    Genetically modified crops are being grown in Britain for the first time in 12 months after controversial trials were resumed without alerting the public, a newspaper reported Monday. Cultivation of a field of potatoes designed to be resistant to pests was abandoned more than a year ago when environmental protesters ripped up the crop, the Daily Telegraph said.
