    Scott Weber, a veterinarian trained in the health needs of fish and other aquatic species, leads the new Aquatic Animal Health team at UC Davis’ William R. Pritchard Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital. The team, which includes exotic-animal veterinarians and a technical crew, is part of the hospital’s Companion Avian and Exotic Pet Service.

    Scientists at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine spent a year reviewing nutritional research on foods produced normally and under organic standards, which ban artificial fertilisers and other chemicals. They concluded there was no significant nutritional difference.

    Expected produce industry safety standards will top the agenda at this year’s Joint Tomato Conference scheduled for Sept. 8-13 in Naples, Fla. The conference, co-sponsored by the Maitland-based Florida Tomato Committee and Florida Tomato Exchange, comes before the start of the second year of mandatory safety inspections of Florida tomato farming operations and packinghouses.

    Frontera Produce Ltd. is recalling one lot of cilantro that has the potential to be contaminated with salmonella. The Edinburg, Texas-based shipper is working with the Food and Drug Administration to make consumers aware of the voluntary recall of Mexican cilantro, according to a July 28 news release. No sicknesses have yet been reported, according to the release.

    An independent review commissioned by the Food Standards Agency (FSA) shows that there are no important differences in the nutrition content, or any additional health benefits, of organic food when compared with conventionally produced food. The focus of the review was the nutritional content of foodstuffs.
