GENEVA -- The World Health Organization's Emergency Committee met Monday morning to discuss the international swine flu epidemic and whether the outbreak, which has now appeared in Mexico, the United States, Canada and Spain, has reached the level of a Phase 4 Global Outbreak.
WHO's Emergency Committee had been scheduled to meet Tuesday, but that meeting was moved up to Monday, said WHO spokesman Gregory Hartl.
"The fact that we have called the committee a day early indicates that this is an event that needs to be dealt with urgently," Hartl said.
He said WHO will announce later Monday what it has decided.
Hartl said there are currently 40 confirmed cases in the United States, 26 in Mexico, 6 in Canada and one in Spain.
President Obama said Monday that the threat of spreading swine flu infections is a cause for concern but "not a cause for alarm."
"We are closely monitoring the emerging cases of swine flu in the United States," Obama said.
An official in New York said the city has 20 more confirmed cases of swine flu, raising the city's total to 28. The official spoke to the Associated Press Monday on condition of anonymity because the news had not been announced. The additional cases are what brought the national total to 40 on Monday.
A private school in South Carolina was closed Monday because of fears that young people returning from Mexico might have been infected.
