A young Mt Evelyn family has endured a horror three weeks of illness after playing in the contaminated Seville Water Play Park.
The popular children’s attraction has been closed until further notice after Yarra Ranges Council confirmed last week laboratory tests had shown heightened levels of E coli bacteria and coliforms.
Mt Evelyn mum Carina Stewart was rushed to the Angliss Hospital on January 5 after becoming seriously ill with vomiting and diarrhoea, after repeatedly visiting the park with her family.
“I could barely move, I felt shocking,” Mrs Stewart said. “I’m a really healthy person and this just knocked me for a six.”
Mrs Stewart was diagnosed with gastroenteritis and stayed overnight in the hospital.
Her two children, Johnny, 2, and Sienna, 11 months, and her husband Matthew have also been sick with gastro, with the children still showing symptoms of the illness.
The family visited the water park a handful of times in the lead-up to Christmas.
Mrs Stewart said friends they had joined at the water park had also reported their children being ill with the same symptoms.
“I am angry and disappointed that proper measures weren’t put in place to prevent this happening.
“Council holds us accountable for everything when we step out of line. Who holds them accountable? Somebody could have died.”
Yarra Ranges Council’s planning, building and health director Andrew Paxton said the council was first notified about instances of vomiting and diarrhoea in children who had visited Seville Water Play Park on January 5.
The council tested the water and decided to close the park on January 16 as a precaution, even though the E coli results were only confirmed last week after the park had already closed.
