Talawakele -- Sri Lanka Police have arrested five people including two principals in connection with the food poisoning incident that hospitalized over 500 children in the central hill town of Talawakele.
The children, who were participating in a function to mark the World Children's Day organized by a volunteer non-governmental organization, had consumed the food prepared for the event held yesterday at the Talawakele Tamil Maha Vidyalaya.
The police arrested two people attached to the NGO which organized the function and another person who supplied the food.
Health officials say 580 children and 12 adults are currently receiving treatment at Nuwara Eliya, Kotagala, Dikoya, Lindula, Watagala and Maskeliya hospitals.
Health officials say a majority of the children are suffering from minor ailments. Two children who were in a critical condition had been transferred to the Nawalapitiya Hospital, they added.
