Summertime favourite Folklorama kicks off this weekend, promising two weeks of global culture, food, and drink among 45 pavilions.
While the festivities and food will be enjoyed by all, officials are doing what they can to avoid a repeat of last year’s E-coli outbreak.
The festival is topping up their health regulations after 44 people were sent to hospital last August, suffering from E-coli.
Health officials linked the outbreak to contaminated punch at the Russian pavilion.
“Sixteen million people visited and enjoyed the food that we served for the past 41 years. We have been linked to one concern, one concern too many for us,” said Folklorama director, Mohamed Ismath.
The Greek pavilion along with all of the others are now familiar with how to keep their food safe, after completing a required food safety workshop.
“How to handle food, what are the safe temperatures for the food, what can happen if you aren’t doing those safety precautions,” said Ismath.
Menus have been given the ‘OK’ by the city health officials and they’ll be keeping a closer eye behind the scenes through surprise inspections.
They are steps organizers and volunteers hope will dish out peace of mind.
