Las Vegas, NV -- Health inspectors visit every restaurant in the valley from your neighborhood to the Las Vegas Strip.
And it's a Strip location that recently faced a not-so-pretty inspection.
Kokomo's Steak and Seafood at The Mirage Hotel-Casino serves steaks, chops, and fresh seafood in a tropical rainforest setting. But a recent visit by the Southern Nevada Health District slapped Kokomo's with a 40-demerit "C" grade.
One more demerit and the eatery would have been shut down.
Among the issues cited were foods like fish, cheese, and tomatoes kept at the improper temperature. And some foods in dry storage and the walk-in freezer were not covered properly. Other foods were incorrectly labeled, and a spray bottle containing an unknown chemical was found stored with food.
There were also issues with cleanliness.
The health report states that the operator was not cleaning and maintaining the property in order to control pest activity, such as dust and grease inside the oven. There were also dirty floors and shelves; caulking found missing or in disrepair; tile missing from the ceiling; and the dishwashing machine was not properly sanitizing.
Action News reached out to MGM Resorts International about Kokomo's Steak and Seafood. Although they wouldn't let us on their property, they did release a statement on behalf of the restaurant:
"The violations noted in the recent health department inspection were clearly unacceptable and were immediately resolved. Kokomo's is focused on maintaining the highest standards for safety and food quality and works closely with the health department to ensure that it complies with all regulations."
Having quickly resolved the violations from the recent inspection, the health department has restored the restaurant's historic "A" rating and confirms Kokomo's is now operating with eight demerits.
