Researchers from Aberystwyth University have established that sandalwood can help to reduce the growth of pathogenic bacteria such as E.coli and listeria.
When fed to animals, this means that energy normally used for methane production can be diverted to increase milk and meat production.
Dr Ahmed Ali, who was involved in the project, said that this was an "exciting discovery" that could have a dramatic impact on methane emissions across the world.
"There would be benefits to the agricultural industry through increased milk and meat production: this increase in productivity would be set against a background of growing pressures on global food supply," he said.
