    In the fall of 2008, 235 people got sick dining at a Harvey’s fast-food restaurant at a major thoroughfare in North Bay, Ontario, about four hours north of Toronto. A report by the North Bay and District Health Unit concluded the outbreak was probably caused by raw Spanish onions and poor cleaning of onion slicing machines.

    The Food Safety Authority of Ireland (FSAI) today reported that one Enforcement Order was served on a food business during the month of January for breaches in food safety legislation pursuant to the FSAI Act, 1998. A Closure Order was served by environmental health officers (EHOs) in the HSE Dublin North East Region on Frier Tuck take-away, 45 Ballybough Road, Dublin 3.

    John Munsell often criticizes FSIS for not tracing back to the source when a positive is found in ground beef product, and I often responded to John that the Agency is doing its best under the difficult circumstances of multiple sources going into the product. Turns out we are both a little bit right and a little bit wrong.

    The Associated Press is reporting a concern about botulism in dogs in Florida that might be linked to dead iguanas. The facts are pretty sparse at the moment and it sounds like both the diagnosis of botulism and the link with iguanas are hypothetical, but it's an interesting story.

    Every time some government type says there are more cases of E. coli O157:H7 and other dangerous bacteria in the summertime because people barbeque more, I cringe. It’s one of those blame-the-consumer comments when the reality is more complicated.
